1997-09-15 PARKS, RECREATION AND BEAUTIFICATION BOARD MINUTESSEPTEMBER 1997 MINUTES MINUTES AS RECORDED OF THE MEETING OF THE CITY OF PEARLAND PARKS RECREATION AND BEAUTIFICATION BOARD HELD ON MONDAY SEPTEMBER 15, 1997, AT 7:00 P.M., AT THE PEARLAND COMMUNITY CENTER, 3523 LIBERTY DRIVE, PEARLAND TEXAS The meeting was called to order at 7:05 P.M., with the following present: Bill Chase Chairman Bobby Stevener Secretary adcr� /�',e..,�pY John Duston Board Member i 5 b' e- Michael Grisby Board Member Edward Hersh Parks & Recreation Director Vince Bruno, Chairman Pro Tem, arrived at 7:07 p.m.; Rosella Webb, Board Member, arrived at 7:30 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Lisa Diese made a motion to accept the minutes of the August 18, 1997, Board Meeting as presented. The motion was seconded by Michael Grisby. Motion approved 5-0. PARK BOARD CHAIRMAN'S REPORT: None. DIRECTORS REPORT: Hand out of the Parks and Recreation Information flyer. This flyer will be updated in the fall to include Jamison Recreation Center and a map including the most recently annexed areas. Jessica Carter attended the TAAF Athletic Conference in San Antonio, Texas. Pearland was awarded a Men's Class D Softball Tournament for 1998. Jessica will also attend the ASA Conference scheduled for next month. c:\tnsoffice\winword\pkbrd97.915 The final Pool Attendance Report was included in packets. Attendance has increased by 40% with 26,275 visitations! Revenue is up 10% due to people utilizing season passes. Total admission revenue collected in 1997 was $20,724.22. Our fall recreation class program began September 8. All classes have not started so an accurate attendance report will not be available until December. The annual Punt, Pass & Kick competition for boys and girls ages 8-15 is scheduled for September 23rd at 3:45 p.m. in Independence Park. This event is sponsored by NFL and Gatorade. The Soccer program has finished week 2. Overall the program is very successful! More interviews are scheduled for the Recreation Center Specialist position. The Third Annual Dog Trot is scheduled for October 25, 1997 at 10:00 a.m. in Independence Park. The Kids Fish Fest is scheduled for November 1, 1997 from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. in Independence Park Pool. One thousand pounds of catfish have already been ordered for this event. The Park Donation Fund is doing extremely well. This idea was first suggested four years ago and revived by Mr. Bruno earlier this year. The first billing cycle has brought in close to $700.00. COMMITTEE REPORTS None. UNFINISHED BUSINESS None. NEW BUSINESS 1. Bill Chase, Chairman appointed a nominating committee of Vince Bruno, Bobby Stevener and Bill Chase to recommend officers for FY 1997/98. Vince Bruno made a motion to approve recommendation, Lisa Diese seconded. Motion approved 7-0. c: \msofiicc\winword\pkbrd97.915 2. Consideration and Possible Action: Request for use of Independence Park Pavilion and Swimming Pool by First Baptist Church. A letter was sent Kevin Pate requesting use of the swimming pool and pavilion on Sunday evenings throughout the summer. The church first began renting these facilities four years ago on Wednesday evenings before switching to Sundays. The Department policy is to allow a maximum of two reservations at one time by any individual or organization. After discussion, Vince Bruno made a motion to deny the request for multiple reservations on a Sunday. Lisa Diese seconded the motion. Motion passed 7-0. After the vote, the Board stated that if the Church was interested in a weeknight, (Monday — Thursday), they would be receptive to discussing this option. OTHER BUSINESS None. OON ADJOURNMENTS: John Duston made a motion to adjourn the meeting. The motion was seconded by Rosella Webb.
