PURPOSE OF THE HEARING: REQUEST BY LYNNE DENTON, AGENT FOR WILLIAM K. AND BARBARA J.
DENTON, OWNERS, FOR SPECIFIC USE PERMIT, SP -5, FOR AGRICULTURAL ANIMAL HUSBANDRY IN
AN R-1 DISTRICT, ON THE FOLLOWING DESCRIBED PROPERTY TO -WIT:
LOT 8, BLOCK 5, SHADYCREST SUBDIVISION (4009 LONGHERRIDGE DRIVE)
Mayor Reid opened the Hearing with some preparatory remarks, followed by comments
from Planning and Zoning Chairman Leroy Savoie.
NUMBER OF PERSONS SIGNING REGISTER: 10
SPEAKING FOR THE PROPOSED REQUEST:
1. Lynne Denton, 4009 Longherridge. Miss Denton explained she was the daughter of
William and Barbara Denton and has raised and shown rabbits for seven years with the
4-H Club and it is strictly a hobby for her. They moved to the home on Longherridge
in March of this year and she is requesting a specific use permit to continue to
raise and show these rabbits for four more years until she graduates from college.
2. Barbara Denton, 4009 Longherridge. Mrs. Denton presented for Council and
Planning & Zoning review brochures and publications concerning the raising and
showing of rabbits and various pictures of some of the show rabbits as well as the
barn built to house them. Mrs. Denton advised that when they purchased the home in
March the realtor told them that the deed restrictions for Shadycrest were more
stringent than zoning. The barn was constructed to house the rabbits without the
Dentons knowing a building permit was required and without them knowing they needed a
specific use permit to raise these rabbits. It was first brought to the City's
attention by a complaint received from one of the neighbors.
3. Robert W. Sorrels, 9922 Southpoint, Houston. Mr. Sorrels advised that he was
very active in various organizations across the State concerning the raising of
rabbits and that he knew Lynne Denton personally through her accomplishments and
contributions to the 4-H Program. He totally supports her activities in raising
rabbits.

4. Mrs. Tyler, 2103 Sprite. Mrs. Tyler spoke in favor of allowing the specific use
request.
SPEAKING AGAINST THE PROPOSED REQUEST:
1. Benny Finley, 4005 Longherridge. Mr. Finley stated that he lived next door to
the Dentons and he was against the request because Shadycrest is a highly restricted
residential area; also, he opposes the large building erected by the Dentons for
their rabbit operation, as well as the raising of the rabbits there.
2. Mike Lucchese, 4004 Longherridge. Mr. Lucchese stated he opposed this request
because it was made after the fact; the operation has been going on for months and
the Dentons are just now requesting a specific use permit.
3. Al Raska, 2107 Sprite Lane. Mr. Raska questioned the issuance of a permit if
animal husbandry is not allowed in that area.
4. Freda Finley, 4005 Longherridge. Mrs. Finley stated that because of the rabbit
facility next door to her, she now has a daily problem with large roaches around her
house.

Some of the questions asked and items discussed by Planning & Zoning, Council and
City Staff dealt with number of rabbits being raised, their care and feeding, the
deed restrictions for Shadycrest Subdivision, and the dimensions and location of the
