NEW BUSINESS
COUNCIL ACTION —RESOLUTION NO OTEXAS SUPPORTIUNGON OF THE E EXPANSION CITY
OF
COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PEARLAND,
THE SAN JACINTO COLLEGE SERVICE AREA TO PISD. City Council.
Councilmember Owens made the motion, seconded by Councilmember Kyle, to
approve Resolution No. R2009-25.
Councilmember Owens stated this item is an attempt to increase the educational
options in the Pearland area. Alvin Community College is currently the community
college that is working with the Pearland Independent School District, but at this time,
the attendance of Pearland students has decreased. The City has been meeting with
San Jacinto Community College to allow the school to help service the Pearland area.
The Resolution will not hinder Alvin Community College from servicing Pearland, but will
allow students another option in the educational service area. Pearland has increased
in size and population and is not adequately supported by Alvin Community College
alone.
Mayor Pro -Tem Beckman stated both of the community colleges have a lot to offer
Pearland students, but they have different strengths. Supporting the expansion of the
San Jacinto College service area would allow student to have access to both entities'
strengths and possibly improve the high school programs too.

Mayor Reid stated one of the reasons for the shared area of Pearland is that Alvin
Community College service area does not provide any tax revenue to the school.
Because there is no revenue coming out of the area, Alvin Community College does not
have an incentive to establish facilities in the City. Supporting
der
what Alvin Community College has to offer in any way, but would possibly allllow thenot twoschools to share the facilities and save money. Sharing the service area in Pearland
would be a tremendous benefit to both colleges.
Councilmember Kyle stated another benefit to this item would come from the City
bringing in the University of Houston. The combination of the service areas would offer
diversified training in the area and allow the three districts to work together.
Councilmember Saboe asked if Staff has given any information to Alvin Community
College regarding the plans to expand the service area for San Jacinto College.
Councilmember Owens stated Alvin Community College has been informed of the
possibility of the expansion.
Voting "Aye" Councilmembers Owens, Saboe, Beckman, and Kyle.
Voting "No" None.
Motion Passed 4 to 0, with Councilmember Cole absent.
