R2005-94 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PEARLAND, TEXAS, SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS BY THE TEXAS TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION TO ADDRESS IMPROVEMENTS TO THE SH 36 AND SH 288 CORRIDORS. WHEREAS, the Governor of the State of Texas has designated SH 36 and SH 288 as major arteries for hurricane evacuation routes for this gulf coast region; and, WHEREAS, Brazoria County has passed a $50 million bond referendum by 67.7% of the voters to be added with an additional $50 million from our cities and special districts, totaling $100 million, to leverage into $400 million worth of needed regional significant roadway projects; and, WHEREAS, the Economic Development Alliance for Brazoria County and its Infrastructure Committee supporters, with its delegation of state legislators and senators, is raising the awareness level of this critical corridor and delivering a presentation to the Texas Transportation Commission in Austin on June 30, 2005; and, WHEREAS, the Texas Department of Transportation is governed by the Texas Transportation Commission, consisting of five members appointed by the governor with the advice and consent of the senate; and, WHEREAS, the Texas Transportation Commission, with the advice and recommendations of the executive director, encourages, fosters, and assists in the development of public and mass transportation in the state; and WHEREAS, addressing mobility is critical to achieving safe and expeditious routes to evacuate large numbers of the gulf coast population in the event of the notice of an incoming hurricane that causes severe destruction in its path; and, WHEREAS, significant growth in Brazoria County has caused congestion which has overburdened area roadways; and, RESOLUTION NO. R2005-94 WHEREAS, the importance of moving traffic expeditiously is in the best interest of achieving a better quality environment for Southeast Texas; and, WHEREAS, Brazoria County works with the Houston-Galveston Area Council as our Metropolitan Planning Organization, (MPO), and our Brazoria County Commissioners, as essential partners to present the best possible solutions to the Texas Department of Transportation where mobility is concerned. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PEARLAND, TEXAS: Section 1. That the City Council of the City of Pearland hereby supports the Brazoria County Commissioners Court in calling upon the Texas Transportation Commission to complete construction funding of SH 36 from Freeport to Interstate 10, and support the improvements to State Highway 288 from Highway 6 to Beltway 8 in northern Brazoria County.
